Kalayaan Centre open house

It’s all set. Kalayaan Cultural Community Centre will open its doors to the public for eight days from May 27 to June 3, 2007 for the open house that aims to promote awareness of its existence in the community.

Largely responsible for the planning and preparations for this big event are: Marjorie Mella, Rowena Sancho, Chiqui-Kat Pineda- Azimi, Joy Almojuela, Jojo Sebastian, Jegma Dimaculangan, Evelyn Laraya and Peachy Forbes, Mayette Balbastro and Charity Lim and of course Mama Ching.

Volunteer Merilyn Macasero, co-chair for the Line dancing will surely surprise everyone in the committee with results of her assigned task. The participation of the Philippine Artists Group has been confirmed. That will surely add more excitement and glamour to the event.

Aside from the PAG exhibit on the first day, a fund raising Monte Carlo event will be held from 2:00 to 9:00 PM. Afternoon snacks and dinner will be served. Entrance ticket is $15. Games to be played are Mahjong, Poker, Bingo and Pusoy. A two-hour line dancing session for $5 is scheduled for the next day, Monday from 7:30 to 9:30. Coffee and light snack will be served.

Tuesday night is movie night. Wednesday, is martial arts demonstration night from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Thursday is Rondalla practice night. On Friday, June 1st the ballroom dancing class will do an exhibition from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Saturday, June 2 is Community Connections Day and many activities are lined up from morning until evening. Booths will be rented out. There will be food sale, art sale, silent auction and white elephant sale of selected items and other interesting items will be sold. Also at 10:00 until 2:00 PM, a free power talk – “Self- Empowerment” will be given by Greg Forbes, and Chiqui-Kat Pineda Azimi will follow with an inspirational sharing. From 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. a painting competition for children and the youth will be conducted. Rules and guidelines will be released shortly. Winners will receive prizes and winning drawings will be included in the 2008 KCCC calendar. A “discoral”/disco sa Bayan will be held at the grand hall at 7:00 PM. Culminating activities will take place on Sunday, June 3rd starting at 1:00 P.M. The renovated area will be blest by Father Sol Paranas, Pastor of the Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Mississauga.

Highlight of the weeklong event is “Music of the Masters – Favorites” a fund raising concert and dinner dance featuring pianist-composer Solon Reyes with guest artist Leander Mendoza, tenor. Dinner will be at 7:00, concert at 8:30 and then dancing afterward. Ticket cost is $50 each and may be obtained by calling the KCCC at 905-602-0923 or 416-271-9228.
