Fil-Can teachers group slates seminar for Philippine trained teachers, educators

TORONTO–The Philippine Teachers Association (PTA), a year- old “kapisanan ng mga guro” in the Greater Toronto Area, will sponsor and undertake a two-day seminar-workshop for internationally-educated teachers jointly with the Kababayan Community Centre of Toronto. The historic initiative , a brainchild of Tony A. San Juan – PTA Vice president for policy and programs, is aimed at providing relevant information to those who wish to undertake Ontario teacher certification and/or seek employment in education and in education- related sector.

Following a joint meeting, led by Leonie Manzanares, Rose Cruz and Tony A. San Juan , PTA President and Vice presidents, respectively , with Ms. Flor Dandal, Executive Director of Kababayan Community Centre in Toronto on September 11, 2007, the PTA decided to spearhead the seminar project specifically planned for teachers or educators who were trained in the Philippines. The seminar will beheld at KCC, #1313 Queen St. West, Ste. 134, Toronto, on October 28 and November 3, 2007 (Saturdays) from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The two-day seminar is open to all interested Ontario residents with Philippine heritage and who are considered internationally educated teachers and/or trained outside the province according to Bill 124. The targeted participants are : newcomers/immigrants, live-in or open- permit caregivers or other Filipino Canadian residents. Those who will attend and complete the six-session, 14-hour activity will be granted a “Certificate of Achievement “

Invited speakers and presenters are government functionaries, educational professional and practitioners from the the Ontario College of Teachers, Ministry of Education, Ontario Teachers Federation, Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board and other agencies.The resource professionals will cover these topics: Ontario education system; teacher certification; workplace law in education, teaching occupations and opportunities and self-assessment and making personal plans.
