New Filipino migrant group formed
A group of Ontario Filipino caregivers, sales, factory and clerical workers formed the Filipino Migrant Workers Movement (FMWM) on January 18, 2008. Defending and fighting for migrant workers’ rights and welfare is the fundamental collective principle behind FMWM’s formation.
A member of Migrante-Ontario, FMWM vows to uphold Migrante’s responsive and pro-active program of action aimed at uplifting the conditions of Filipino migrant workers and their families.
FMWM’s first mass activity was the screening of the film “Modern Heroes, Modern Slaves’ held on Feb. 24 at Thornhill, Vaughan. Many caregivers attended the event which included a discussion on current issues facing Filipino migrant workers.
The event also included a discussion on the current campaign for legislative changes in the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) being spearheaded by the Coalition for the Protection of Caregivers’ Rights (CPCR).
Last March 8, FMWM also joined in the International Women’s Day rally in the snowy streets of downtown Toronto. FMWM members together with other Migrante-Ontario organizations braved the snowstorm to show support for the struggle of all the women especially migrant women.
Upcoming FMWM activities include: Tax Clinic, Know Your Rights workshop, film screenings of Brown Women, Blonde Babies and When Strangers Reunite. All these activities are for free.
