UPAA Toronto’s Centennial ball, awards
The festivities celebrating the University of the Philippines Centennial are actively pursued throughout this year in the campuses in the Philippines as well as everywhere in the world where UP alumni reside.
In the spirit of celebrating 100 years of academic excellence and leadership, the UP Alumni Association Toronto will hold its Centennial Ball on October 25, 2008 at the Marriott Hotel Eaton Centre Toronto, 525 Bay Street. The highlight of this celebration is the presentation of the UPAA Toronto Distinguished Alumni Awards. These awards recognize and honor UP alumni who have achieved distinction in their field, bringing honor and prestige to the Filipino community and to their Alma Mater. A board of judges will provide a thorough screening and selection process.
Nomination is open to graduates of UP who are residents of Ontario. Candidates must have outstanding achievements and contribution to any of these six (6) areas of endeavors: 1) Academics (education, including research, teaching, program development or administration; 2) Arts and Letters (arts, literature, theater and music ); 3) Sports (professional or amateur; 4) Professional (social sciences, sciences, law or medicine and allied health fields); 5) Business and Industry; 6) Public Service (including government, non-profit service sector or community-based organizations).
UPAA president Noel Cruz stated that it has always been a hard task for the board of judges to select the winners for the distinguished alumni awards, as there are so many deserving alumni. “ We say this with great humility, but with a tinge of pride, that as Filipinos, we take responsibility in professional and community leadership. This has been deeply inculcated in our hearts and minds as students at UP.”
