Summerfest ‘09: July 12
The Philippine Colleges and Universities Alumni Associations (PCUAA) is gearing up for its 8th Summerfest event to be held this summer. It will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2009 at the Mississauga Valley Community Centre Park (Mississauga Valley and Central Parkway). The day-long event will start at 9 a.m. and end at 9 p.m. As usual, hundreds of collegians and their families are expected to attend this annual event.
As in the past, each alumni association has a designated shed and picnic tables decorated by their alma mater’s colors and symbols. Flags and buntings decorate each spot, and attendees usually wear shirts and summer hats with their schools’ logos and colors. Each group provides sumptuous potluck or catered lunch, snacks and beverages, and everybody is welcome to visit and partake of each other’s provisions. The program includes singing as well as other talent shows. It is also an opportunity to meet former school buddies and colleagues.
Sports and fun games provide a raucous competition among alumni associations, and the group that wins the most points takes home the revolving trophy. The University of the Philippines Alumni Association won the over-all trophy last year, which coincided with its Centennial Year. Other groups also covet the trophy and are determined to wrestle if from the UPians this year.
PCUAA held a very successful Awards Ceremony and Dinner Dance last January 31, 2009 and generated funds that will cover the picnic ground fees and other incidental expenses for Summerfest 2009. Thus, shared expenses are waived, and alumni associations are encouraged to rejuvenate their groups and join this year’s event.
More coordinating meetings are scheduled to finalize the activities of Summerfest 2009 at the Kalayaan Community Centre at 5225 Orbitor Drive, Mississauga, on April 19, May 24 and June 21 – all Sundays – from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Representatives of different university and colleges are encouraged to attend.
PCUAA is an umbrella organization of graduates of about 16 universities and colleges in the Philippines – considered to be the biggest group of its kind in North America if not in the world. It aims to foster closer ties among Filipino graduates of various learning institutions from back home.
