Kalayaan gears up for Independence Day Celebration
The Kalayaan Filipino Cultural Organization, commonly known as “Kalayaan”, is in high gear with the preparation for the of the 111th Philippine Independence Day celebration. The events planned for this year includes the Independence Day gala, the annual community picnic, and a cultural show.
The Philippine Independence Day gala is jointly hosted by Kalayaan and PIDC. This dinner dance event kicks off the start of the Independence Day celebration and will be held on Saturday, June 6. 2009 at the Double Tree Hotel by Hilton. Following the Independence Day Gala, Kalayaan is holding the annual picnic (referred to this year as the Summer Festival), on Sunday, June 7, 2009 at the Mississauga Valley Park. A community mass will be held to start off the event and will be followed by a ceremonial parade within the park. A variety of Filipino talents from individuals and groups will provide entertainment for the crowd throughout the day. In relation to this, Kalayaan wishes to invite groups and individuals who may want to perform during the picnic. Those interested may call Nestor Perez at 416-317-2559. Registration deadline is on May 31, 2009 and only those who registered will be allowed to perform.
The main event during the summer festival is the final draw of winning tickets for the lottery which is being held annually to raise funds for Kalayaan Cultural Community Centre (KCCC). For further information regarding the picnic, please contact Adie dela Cruz at 416-828-6073.
To culminate the Independence Day celebration, Kalayaan is presenting a cultural show at the Living Arts Centre (LAC) aptly titled, “Malayang Pilipinas”. This will be held on Saturday, June 13 at the RBC auditorium of the LAC in Mississauga. Conceptualized and directed by Eno Mascalado Kalash, the show will feature the journey of the Philippines to freedom interpreted through songs and dances. This will be the first time that three major Filipino dance troupes in GTA (Culture Philippines, Fiesta Filipina and Folklorico Filipino Canada) are performing together in one show with a few popular singers in the community.
