$10K released for Ondoy victims

$10K released for Ondoy victims

TORONTO–The Canadian Aid & Relief Project (CARP), a Toronto-based organization founded and headed by noted Filipino local family physician Dr. Francisco Portugal which extends medical and relief Aid to disaster prone and impoverished communities in the Philippines today has launched a disaster relief fund for the victims of the Great Manila Flood of 2009.

Last Saturday (Sept. 26), tropical storm Ondoy dumped a record 455 millimeters of rain in 12 hours that inundated at least 55 percent of Metro Manila, equivalent to a month of rainfall in Manila and more than what Katrina did in New Orleans. The storm immediately flooded low lying areas resulting in a deluge unseen in 42 years. There were 140 confirmed dead as of this writing and more than half a million displaced and homeless. It is feared that a breakout of cholera and typhoid fever is imminent.

According to Edgar Adan Executive Director, the Canadian Aid & Relief Project (CARP) immediately released $10,000(P440,000 pesos) remaining from its coffers for relief operations. Its medical staff from CARP’s newly-established health center in Antipolo City, Philippines was mobilized for relief operations in Montalban and Cainta. Food, medicines and clothing are urgently needed. Vaccines from Canada will be shipped by air immediately.
