EDITORIAL: Unity in times of urgent need
As the death toll continues to rise and news of the devastation inflicted by typhoon “Ondoy” starts to sink in the minds and hearts of Filipinos everywhere, our own Toronto Filipino community has quickly responded. Already, some major organizations have started relief campaigns and fundraising activities to help the victims and their families.
This is commendable, to say the least. As governments of countries like Canada, international institutions like the Red Cross, and entertainment stars from the Philippines and other countries have also poured their support and help, Filipino Canadians in Toronto have started to move with serious projects to do their share.
What is urgently needed, however, is a unified effort among these Toronto groups in order to maximize results. We have seen enough of this kind of activities, often duplicating each other, at times breeding unfriendly competition, resulting in unimpressive results. Now is the golden opportunity for community leaders to shed their immaturity and realize that unity in times of urgent need is the only effective way to serve.
