Barrio Fiesta comes to London, ON
By Joshua Lopez
It’s that time of the year in London, Ontario, when “Barrio” madness is in the air! The Western Ontario Organization of Filipinos is hosting their biggest event of the year and annual Cultural showcase, ‘Barrio Fiesta’!
Taking place on Saturday, April 3rd at Wolf Performance Hall in London, Ontario, ‘Barrio Fiesta’ is a celebration of Filipino identity and culture, both past and present, from the traditional to the contemporary. With performances celebrating our history through traditional dance and costume (Tinikling anyone? How about Pandanggo sa Ilaw?), to musical performances delivered by the resident talents, to a deep artistic exploration of the Filipino identity, ‘Barrio Fiesta’ is far ranging in scope and celebrates the Filipino people and culture through all the ages.
Barrio Fiesta has been a tradition for the Western Ontario Organization of Filipinos (affectionately known as WOOF) and the local London Filipino community for what will now be 6 years, showcasing not only their own communities talent but also many others from the University of Western Ontario Community.
Samantha Sewell, current VP Internal of WOOF, says, “We are encouraging the Filipino community not just in London, but across Ontario to join us in our celebration of art, music, and culture!”
Part of the proceeds this year are being donated to Right to Play (http://www.righttoplay.com/canada/Pages/Home.aspx), a Canadian charity that aims to improve the lives of children in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world by using the power of sport and play for development, health, and peace.
Show starts 2pm-4pm. Tickets are $12 for seniors and alumni, $15 for regular admission. Wolf Performance Hall is located at 251 Dundas Street, London, On., N6A 6H9.
