A colorful gala as PHB turns 30
A colorful gala as PHB turns 30
Thirty years is a remarkable achievement and Philippine Heritage Band marked it with a grand gala night on November 5.
Supporters, Vaughan officials, past and present members and other guests, 500 in all, got together at the La Gondola Banquet Hall in Vaughan for a dinner-dance-concert event. The band, in its sparkling red and black gala, presented a mini-concert under the baton of Maestro Denis Mastromonaco. The repertoire was a sample of what PHB has to offer, musically. The mini-concert was preceded by a majorette’s exhibition, and individual dance numbers by Meagan Malixi, Leianne Vergara and Vanessa Guinto.
President Carol Bañez recognized PHB founder Oscar Fariñas for his vision of a community band becoming a reality and the pioneering spirit of those who joined PHB in its early years. Bañez said that putting the spotlight on the pioneer members at that momentous occasion was a gesture that is in keeping with PHB’s values as a well respected organization. In appreciation of Fariñas’s remarkable efforts and dedication, he was awarded a look-alike Hollywood Oscar’s academy award trophy. Bañez also acknowledged the tremendous support of friends, family and the community at large over the years. Carol made special mention of the hardworking playing members, parents, Board of Directors and assistants.
Each of the pioneer members received a plaque for joining PHB in its foundation year of 1980-1981 and helping build the foundation upon which PHB stands today. Each pioneer member was called to the front with spouse/guest and escorted by two bandmajors. The group in attendance was led by Sonny Meneses – the most senior among them, Jack Malixi, Bayani Manalo, Freddie Bronilla, Pepe Arambulo, Rodolfo Vilan, Roger Perono Jr, Arcie Perono and Bill Navarro. Also presented a loyalty plaque was former Music Director & Conductor Orly Inocentes.
A collage of PHB in video made the night much more colourful. Then there was the cutting of the anniversary cake. Dancing went on through the early morning hour, with occasional drawing of raffle prizes.
“PHB is machinery powered by volunteers” said founder Oscar Farinas and Executive Director as he stressed the power of many whose efforts made it all possible for PHB to reach this milestone. He cited the pioneer members, Mac and Josie Guinto’s outstanding services since the 1980’s, Bert and Au de Lara whose friendship with then Councillor Mario Racco made it possible for PHB to have a home, Lito Martin who started the drumline, all past presidents for their respective accomplishments, present president Carol Banez for her exemplary leadership, and all unnamed who came to PHB and did their share of service, then moved on or have stayed on.
PHB is a marching/concert band based in Vaughan, Ontario, and is engaged in providing music in parades and other festivities. At the same time, it serves as medium for youth training and development, and enriches the Filipino image before Canadian and American audiences. Those interested in joining may visit PHB’s website at www.phband.com and may register any time.
