Stripping the right to strike from TTC employees
Stripping the right to strike from TTC employees
The Toronto & York Region Labour Council strongly opposes the McGuinty government’s legislation introduced today to strip the right to strike from employees of the Toronto Transit Commission.
“We are deeply disappointed that the Premier and his cabinet are doing the dirty work of Mayor Rob Ford to attack basic labour rights in this province.” Said John Cartwright, President of the Toronto & York Region Labour Council. “There is a certain irony that even the anti-labour regime of Mike Harris didn’t go so far during its time”.
“The right to withdraw one’s labour is a basic civil right in a free society. It is unacceptable to say that working men and women lose that right if somebody is inconvenienced. Declarations of essential service are supposed to be defined by risks to public health or safety, not convenience.”
“This move certainly will create a rift between the Liberal government and Labour in 2011.”
