Invitation to Filipino Canadian youth

Studies have suggested that Filipino-Canadian youth are not always reaching their potential in terms of educational attainment and employment. Why is this so? The Filipino Youth Transitions in Canada (FYTIC) project is trying to find out.

The FYTIC project is based at York University and was developed in collaboration with the Community Alliance for Social Justice (CASJ). With research teams in Toronto, Hamilton, Winnipeg and Vancouver, the project is the first nation-wide study of Filipino youth experiences in Canada.

On September 19th, the project launched an online survey of Filipino-Canadians. If you are over 18 years old, and you were either born in Canada or came here as a child, then you are eligible to participate.

So far, over 350 youth have completed the survey online (available at www.fytic.edudata.ca), but more respondents are needed. We are especially encouraging those who have chosen different educational and career pathways after high school, aside from university, such as college, vocational /trades, apprenticeship, setting up one’s own business, and other routes.

This study will generate useful information. For the Filipino community across the country, it will identify issues that can be addressed through mobilization and action. For educators, counsellors, and youth leaders, it will highlight the specific concerns of Filipino youth and the kinds of support that will help them achieve their potential. And, for government policy-makers, it will identify areas where more support is needed.

This is a crucial chance for Filipino-Canadian voices to be heard!
