Josie de Leon starts performing arts school
Josie de Leon is a familiar name to many as one of the most sought-after performer in the Filipino Canadian Community. Ms . de Leon started her singing career in Manila when she won the Student Pop Music Festival in 1988 and as part of her prize, she trained at the Center for Pop Music Philippines and eventually mentored younger and aspiring singers at the Center.
As a professional singer at 16, she performed in various music bars in Manila thus making her the youngest member of the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-Aawit or OPM . As a member of OPM, she learned a lot from big names in the Filipino music industry like Celeste Legaspi, Mitch Valdez, Jim Paredes , Mon David and director par excellence, Freddie Santos . It also opened more doors for Ms. de Leon, making her visible in a lot of OP- produced shows all over the Philippines. In 1991, she won the prestigious Fe S. Panlilio Music Scholarship Award which was given by the organization.
Thankful and humbled, she continued to perform in five star hotels, top billing Calesa Bar ( Hyatt Regency) , Manila Hotel and Shangrila to name a few of her stints. Aside from these , she had several shows and concerts that have earned her a spot as one of VIVA- RJ’s recording artists.
Migrating to Toronto in 1997, she took a leave in the limelight and re-emerged in 2005. From then on, she had shows one after the other, dubbing her as “ Toronto ‘s Diva” – she acknowledges the title with a smile and say “why not, but I say without the attitude .”
Ms. de Leon indeed has come a long way in the Filipino -Canadian entertainment industry earning the respect of the Fil-Can community so it is not surprising that now she has happily announced the Josie de Leon Performing Arts School.
Josie says “ its time to share to others what I have learned through the years in this business and with the support of my husband Mark Crescini, who is also an experienced talent and record producer, I am excited on this new endeavor .”
Olive Tulod , a mother of a student commented, “ Josie is a such a good performer, with the voice plus the way she carries herself on stage, I readily signed up my daughter because I trust her for my daughter’s dream of becoming a singer.”
The school is open to everyone who likes to perform, may it be young aspiring Canadian Idols, or young at heart ones who would like to hone their singing prowess.
