Carmencita ‘Ging’ Hernandez, community activist, writes 30
Carmencita “Ging” Hernandez, known for her long-time activism in the Filipino community in Toronto, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011 in Toronto Western Hospital.
She suffered from a stroke on Sunday, Dec. 4 and went immediately on comatose. According to reports, she was pronounced brain dead later and the life support system was pulled on Tuesday (Dec.6).
Hernandez leaves a legacy of involvement in various community advocacies and a long list of awards and achievements. Among them are:
Founding board member of Kababayan Community Centre, 1977.
Came to Canada in 1975, with a Masters of Science degree in Finance from University of Minnesota.
Worked for the Ministry of the Attorney General (MAG) of Ontario.
Was accountant of the Ontario Court and manager of Client Services, Family Support Plan.
Was Senior Financial Coordinator at Jobs Ontario, 1992.
A leader of Coalition Against the Marcos Dictatorship.
Participated in the work of Philippines Canada Human Resource Development and Philippine Development Assistance Program.
Was a member of the Philippines-Canada Development Forum and Philippine Historical Society.
Founding member of the Coalition of Visible Minority Women which helped immigrant women practice their professions in Canada.
Was a board member of INTERCEDE, an advocacy group for domestic workers.
Was elected Regional Vice President of the National Organization of Immigrant and Minority Women in 1986.
Received the City of Toronto Constance Hamilton Award, 1987.
Received The Toronto Star Woman of the Year Award, 1989.
Received the YWCA Women of Distinction Award, 1990As Regional Vice President of the National Organization of Filipino Canadians in GTA, helped organize the First Filipino Canadian National Conference on Wife Assault held in Montreal.
Received the Banaag Award from Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos, 1993 .
