OBITUARY: Gloria Licad-Lanot – 1917-2012


Music teacher and pianist, passed away at age 94 on Sabado de Gloria, April 7, 2012. Born in Lubao, Pampanga, on August 15, 1917, she obtained an AB degree, major in Piano, at St. Scholastica’s College; an MA in Piano at Chicago Musical College, where she got a standing ovation at her graduation recital; and an MA in Music Education at the University of the Philippines Conservatory of Music (now College of Music).

She also took up painting subjects at the Philippines Women’s University, where she taught piano for some time. Then, she moved to UP until she retired as professor at the UP College of Music. After her retirement, she took up cooking lessons and became a favorite caterer in schools, offices, private parties; at art exhibitions and book launchings; and of non-governmental organizations such WOMEN (Women Writers in Media Now) and the Concerned Artists of the Philippines-Women’s Desk (CAP-Women’s Desk). She was famous for her bottled Oriang’s Bangus.

She is the author of the book, Graded Piano Pieces Based on Philippine Folk Tunes, for which she did the arrangement of the piano pieces. She was honored as outstanding alumna of St. Scholastica’s College, and as outstanding teacher of the UP College of Music.

Gloria Licad Lanot is the widow of poet-essayist-journalist-astrologer Serafin Lanot, former director of the Bureau of Printing and head of Tamaraw Publishing House, Inc. She is survived by her children Marra PL. Lanot and husband Jose F. Lacaba; Xyrus L. Lanot and wife Evangeline; and Pfootsy Lanot; and by her grandchildren Amiel Cortes; Kris Lanot Lacaba and wife Francezca C. Kwe; Kojih Lanot and wife Christel; Gideon Lanot and wife Riza; Gimo Lanot and wife Ida; and Lorenzo; as well as by great-grandchildren Zyra and Anya. Coming from a brood of nine, Gloria has also left behind her sisters Conchita L. Maninang, Rosario L. Yap, Afric L. Alfonso, and Maritta L. Morales.

The wake was at St. Peter Chapels on 296 Quezon Avenue, QC. Interment was in the morning of April 13 at Loyola Memorial Park, Marikina.
