Anakbayan-Toronto is happy to invite you all to a celebration of the Philippine struggle for true independence on Saturday 7 July 2012.
This date marks the 120th anniversary of the founding of the Katipunan, the revolutionary armed struggle that defeated the Spanish (only to have the Americans start a new war to take their place).
Join us for an afternoon of activities, performances, art, games, and education. We will celebrate our cultural heritage hand in hand with a celebration of our history of struggle.
The event will feature two complementary sections:
• a community bazaar (featuring tables from community groups, vendors, and more, as well as art displays and interactive games);
• and a performance area which will feature hot local talent; afternoon workshops on Filipino culture, history, and current events; as well as interactive cultural workshops.
Diwa 2012 will boldly speak about Filipino pride not for pride’s sake alone. In these days when surface level pride is common: ‘flag’ themed fashions, pride in the accomplishments of Pacquiao, joy at the visibility of Filipino dancers, singers, and artists, etc. We are happy to see this renaissance of open Filipino-ness, but we believe that true pride must go deeper.
Diwa 2012 will celebrate pride in the Filipino spirit of struggle despite the odds. During the Spanish period we fought colonialism and won. During the Japanese period we fought and won. Today the struggle goes on. And we fight on for true independence. It is in this that we find the true source of pride.
Join us. Celebrate Filipino pride that comes from our history of epic struggle.
Performers include:
• Alexander The: a Toronto phenomenon. His music has been on the cutting edge of the Toronto scene for years. He merges traditional Pinoy music with modern beats.
• Southeast Cartel: conscious hip-hop in both Tagalog and English, they’re hitting the Toronto scene by storm.
• Pantayo Ensemble: a new Toronto based Kulintang ensemble. Raised in Canada, and fiercely Filipino, this group uses traditional tribal instruments as a way to identify with our ancient culture.
• Rhea Gamana- an activist and performer Rhea combines both of her passions her performances singing Filipino patriotic songs and messages of hope
• Spin- an activist and master of spoken word of consciousness, Spin’s message of revolution and people power reverberates to all the people who comes to his performance.
Community Bazaar:
• community groups including Migrante, FMWM, IWWorkers, Gabriela, and more
• Filipino themed clothing retailers (including Filipinas Clothing Co.)

• Filipino games (from dama to sungka and more!)
• and lots more
