The Philippine Teachers Association of Canada (PTAC) is sponsoring and conducting its 5th professional development seminar for its member- teachers and other interested Filipino Canadian teachers and educators. The annual free workshop, aptly titled: “Career Search: Interview Skills, Tools and Networking Strategies for Educators” will be held on March 17, 2013 (Sunday), 12:00 noon – 4:30 p.m. at Loblaws Supermarket Social Centre, # 396 St. Clair Avenue West, near Bathurst Street, Toronto, Ontario.
As one of the 3 scheduled teacher-organized events for 2013, the seminar will cover relevant information, valuable insights and effective strategies to participants in the areas of developing and employing appropriate career search tools such as cover-letters and resume writing. Likewise,the gathering aims to offer ways and opportunities in generating and cultivating job networking contacts as well as to afford attendees acquire desirable interview skills on school board- and -school level teacher interviews. At the workshop, some volunteer attendees are expected and will undertake mock interviews with immediate feedback and critique by experienced teachers and other invited resource professionals sitting as a panel.
Organized seven years ago, the Association is composed of Filipino Canadian professionals who are registered or practicing teachers in Ontario and /or former educators in the Philippines and overseas. The 105- member volunteer run, socio-professional organization is headed by Tony A. San Juan, OCT, a semi- retired teacher with the Toronto District School Board. Appointed to lead the seminar are co-chairs Perly Laganas and Grace De la Reyna and vice chair Donna Scutariu, all OCT-Ontario Certified Teachers. Among those invited to make presentations and serve as resource persons are Dr. Ramon Morales, a professor at Durham College, Lily Hope Mendoza, vice principal of Williams Private School, elementary school teachers Cielito Drapeza, Rose Apilado and Maricon Bernasor and secondary school teachers Redentor Andres and Bonifacio Curutan. Providing administrative and logistical support are PTAC executive officers Bernadette Gapuz, Rose Cruz, Pet Collantes, Grace Basconcillo and Sheng Maligsay.
