Ging Hernandez Fund
Ging Hernandez Fund
Over a year ago, on December 6, 2011, Carmencita “Ging” Hernandez, a veteran human rights activist, passed away. There was an immediate and overwhelming expression of support among Ging’s many friends, the Filipino and other Canadian communities to honor Ging and her long unselfish service to many communities, with a funeral/memorial service. There were also offers of financial support to defray the expenses.
A joint bank account was set up at the Royal Bank of Canada to accept donations for the sole purpose of receiving and disbursing funds for Ging’s funeral/memorial service and related expenses. The joint account was opened with Zoraida Flores de Leon and Teresa Concepcion as joint signatories. Voltaire de Leon was later added as an alternate signatory to Zoraida de Leon.
The financial support from the community was generous, and after payment of Ging’s funeral /memorial services, there were funds left for other expenses, which included shipping of her personal effects to the Philippines and the payment for storage Ging maintained after the sale of her home in Toronto. As there was still funds left after the above expenses, and after consultation with Ging’s friends, the balance of the funds were remitted to the Philippines to help defray the cost of the long term care of Ging’s mother is confined in a hospital. All the funds from this account have now been disbursed.
A breakdown of the receipts and disbursements of these funds are as follows:
Receipts
Donations $15,643.00
Deposit interest 7.68
Total receipts $15,650.68
Disbursements
Funeral services $5,850.00
Storage fee/shipping 1,940.00
Bank charges 48.00
Care of Ging’s mother 7,812.68
Total disbursements $15,650.68
As some of you might be aware, Zoraida de Leon who made the arrangements for the funeral and memorial services for Ging, was in poor health even before Ging passed away. Sadly, Zoraida also passed away on October 13, 2012, only 10 months after the death of Ging.
A number of the donors indicated to Zoraida that they would not wish their names published in the event that we decide to publish the names of donors. Because of her illness, I was not able to obtain the names of these individuals from Zoraida. Needless to say, I do have the list of the donors as well as of the breakdown of disbursements and I would be happy to show the information to those interested short of publishing the same. Alternatively, I would be happy to publish the names of the donors who wish to have their names published . I can be contacted below for any questions.
We would like to thank the Filipino and Canadian communities for their generosity in helping defray the cost of the funeral and memorial services for Ging Hernandez.
