Young Fil-Cans take world performing arts contest by storm
This past July, three young Filipino-Canadians flew to Hollywood, California to represent Canada at WCOPA (the World Championships of Performing Arts). Alyssa Datu, age 13, Katharine Reyes, age 10, and Roy Tugbang, age 18, joined 5 other members of Team Canada. All 8 Canadian representatives came home with medals. Alyssa received a Bronze and a Silver, Katharine brought home 3 Gold medals, and Roy garnered a Silver and 3 Golds. Each of these three are Ontario residents. Alyssa and Katharine hail from Markham while Roy currently lives in Newmarket.
In addition to getting medals, these FilCan youths also distinguished themselves as Overall Division Winners, with Katharine receiving the award for best Female Tap Dancer, aged 10 and under, and Roy achieving best Male vocalist aged 16-24 in the Broadway, Opera and World categories. Both Katharine and Roy also managed to advance to the semifinal round. Out of hundreds of contestants, each was specially chosen to be among a semifinalist group of only 16 in each of their respective performing arts categories.
These talented Filipino-Canadians had the privilege of attending a Music Seminar given by 2005 WCOPA Senior Performer of the World, Jed Madela. Jed Madela became the first World Grand Champion winner to be inducted into the Performing Arts Hall of Fame during this competition.
