TORONTO–Flor Marcelino, Minister of Culture, Heritage and Tourism, Province of Manitoba; Caroline Mangosing, Executive Director of Kapisanan Community Centre in Toronto; Enrique Castellvi, freelance journalist; and The Philippine Reporter, a twice-a-month community newspaper; are the Filipino-Canadian recipients of the distinguished 2013-2014 National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC) Awards.
This year, the NEPMCC Awards Selection Committee, headed by the organization’s Ombudsman, chose 14 individuals in the community for outstanding achievements in their respective fields; four journalists for exceptional services rendered; five magazines, four electronic media organizations, and 18 newspapers, of which 15 were for best editorial and design, while three were for community services. The list of 2014 awardees was recently released by Thomas Saras, President and CEO of the NEPMCC, a national organization consisting of over 600 ethnic media organizations all over the country.
Marcelino was selected from among several candidates for her outstanding community services, under the Community Leaders Category. Mangosing was chosen for outstanding individual leadership achievements in Culture/Community/Arts category. Castellvi is being recognized for “exceptional services rendered to communications.” The Philippine Reporter was selected among the 15 best newspapers in editorial and design.
This is the fifth time in 10 years that The Philippine Reporter — which in 2014 marks 25 years of successful publishing – has been honoured by the respected national media organization. The first three awards for “Best in Editorial and Visual Presentation,” were received in 2003, 2005, 2008, which were presented to Hermie Garcia, Publisher and Editor, by the Hon. David Onley, Ontario Lieutenant Governor, and NEPMCC President Saras, during formal award ceremonies held at Queens Park.
The fourth award for “Human Rights and Social Justice” in the Journalists Category was presented to Mila Astorga-Garcia, The Philippine Reporter’s Managing Editor, during the 2007 NEPMCC Awards Ceremony.
This year’s formal award ceremonies will be held on Nov. 15, 2013, to be hosted by Lt. Gov. Onley at Queen’s Park.
