Campaign vs unpaid internship launched
QUEEN’S PARK–On Tuesday (Nov. 5), Students Against Unpaid Internship Scams launched their campaign urging the Ontario government to take action on unpaid internships in a press conference sponsored by Davenport MPP Jonah Schein.
“We have launched this campaign because policy lapses and government inaction have created a situation where our friends and classmates are being exploited, the law is being disrespected, and entry level jobs are being displaced by unpaid internships,” said group spokesperson Josh Mandryk. “It’s time for action on unpaid internships.”
Students Against Internship Scams are seeking a proactive enforcement of the current laws on unpaid internships, a public education campaign so students, youth, employers and the general public know their legal rights and obligations, and a comprehensive review of all of the laws surrounding unpaid internships in Ontario.
The group has launched a website at www.payyourinterns.ca from which Ontarians can send a letter urging the Minister of Labour to take action.
The group will also be collecting signatures for their petition on campus at the University of Toronto, and plan to work with students to spread the campaign to campuses across Ontario.
