Orientation workshop for newcomers Nov. 16
Orientation workshop for newcomers Nov. 16
Often, the novelty of first arriving to live or work here in Canada and the need to find immediate employment overshadow the initial almost-necessary steps a newcomer must first make after landing. Unfortunately, a substantial population of newcomers never find out the many free services that are available to them until after the duration of their eligibility has lapsed.
Kababayan Multicultural Centre, settlement agency since 1977, aims to address that very need—to assist newcomers into undertaking the best possible transition. Although the name “Kababayan” is Filipino, the centre has always remained impartial to cultural backgrounds and its doors have always been and always will be, open to everyone regardless of ethnicity. This is the reason behind the updated name of Kababayan Multicultural Centre, to reflect the actual services being provided and extended to the whole community and the general public.
As one of the bigger initiatives of the centre, the Newcomers’ Information Workshop has been organized in partnership with the Philippine Consulate General and the Philippine Overseas Labour Office. This is a perfect activity for all newcomers (immigrants, refugees, caregivers etc.) as it will provide relevant and important information about settling in Canada. The programme consists of collaborative work between experts in various areas such as the Philippine consular and labour services, community and social services, programs for foreign-trained professionals, the employment standards act/labour laws and immigration laws affecting immigrants and , foreign workers and caregivers. The whole-day affair is truly an opportunity to serve newcomers and to enable them to find their space and integrate themselves into Canadian living and society.
