Toronto Community Housing Staff Network Raises over $3,400 in support of PH Typhoon Disaster Relief

Toronto Community Housing staff, led by the Filipino Kababayan Network, have raised over $3,400 for victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

The employee network held a potluck dinner on November 30 to raise funds for victims of the disaster. “Kababayans” or “people from the same country” came together to help those in need and to provide support to Toronto Community Housing employees who have family members that were affected.

“The members of the Filipino Kababayan Network are extremely grateful for the support and the generosity of their colleagues,” said Karen Pascual, a tenant services coordinator and president of the employee network. “The cataclysmic effects of Typhoon Haiyan affected people in many different ways and it’s heart-warming to see a united effort within the organization to show a deep desire to help.”

The Filipino Kababayan Network also collected non-monetary donations, such as used clothing, canned goods and other non-perishable items. These items will be sent directly to affected areas in the Philippines with the assistance of the Leyteno Association of Ontario.

“Natural disasters are shocking and affect people near and far in different ways. I would like to extend my heart-felt condolences to anyone who has family, friends or loved ones in the Philippines,” said Gene Jones, President and CEO, Toronto Community Housing. “Through the efforts of Toronto Community Housing employees and the newly formed Filipino Kababayan Network, we have raised funds to help victims during this time of greater need.”

The network will direct all funds raised to Gawad Kalinga Canada.

The Philippines was ravaged when Typhoon Haiyan struck on Friday, November 8. The storm caused major loss of life, displaced hundreds of thousands of people and raised concerns about whether survivors have access to clean water, food and shelter.
