LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Terrible acts of violence vs Canada
Dear Editor,
Canadians across the nation are all shocked and saddened at the terrible acts of violence that took place last week. We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Canadian Armed Forces members who succumbed to injuries caused by these attacks. We count on our Armed Forces to protect our nation and diligently carry out their duties so that we can live in a peaceful country.
Canada’s national security agencies are constantly assessing the threat of terrorism and taking action to protect Canadians. Our Government will continue to work with community leaders across our nation to fight the threat of radicalized views.
As the Prime Minister said on Wednesday, “I’ve been saying that our laws and police powers need to be strengthened in the area of surveillance, attention and arrest. They need to be much strengthened and I assure you, Mr. Speaker, that work which is already underway will be expedited.”
That is why today I tabled in the House of Commons the Protection of Canada from Terrorists Act.
This bill will introduce targeted amendments to the CSIS Act to ensure that CSIS has the tools it needs to investigate threats to the security of Canada.
The bill will also amend the Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act to allow the Government to seek earlier implementation of the citizenship revocation provisions in order to revoke Canadian citizenship from dual citizens who are convicted of terrorism, high treason or spying offences.
Rest assured that Canada will not be intimidated by these cowardly attacks. Canadians can be certain that we will continue to take the necessary measures to ensure that law enforcement has the tools it needs to keep Canadians safe.
The Hon. Steven Blaney
Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
