Our talented athletes are returning home with an impressive medal count including 47 gold, 40 silver and 25 bronze. Sports in which Ontario’s athletes excelled include alpine skiing, archery, badminton, biathlon, cross country skiing, curling, hockey, figure skating, gymnastics, judo, snowboarding, table tennis and target shooting.
This year, more than 330 athletes, coaches, managers, chaperones and technicians, as well as 20 mission staff, represented the province at the games.
Two athletes from York Centre represented Team Ontario at the 2015 Canada Winter Games. Some of our athletes who stood on the podium include:
Owen Tippet from York Centre won a Gold medal in Hockey
Sofia Moraes Arispe from York Centre won a Silver medal in Gymnastics Artistic – Team
Ontario supports its athletes year-round through programs like Quest for Gold, which benefitted more than 150 Team Ontario athletes at this year’s Canada Winter Games.
Giving amateur athletes more opportunities to succeed supports the government’s efforts to create a healthier Ontario through sport and active recreation. It is also part of Ontario’s four-part economic plan to build Ontario up by investing in people’s talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives, and building a secure savings plan so everyone can afford to retire.
