Blog #16: Insecure, temporary status
There is permanent instability in the status of temporary foreign workers and undocumented immigrants in North America.
I recently read a news report about an undocumented Filipino who worked as a graphic artist in New York but when her work visa expired, she decided to stay and live in the shadows just like an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S.
President Obama has started his immigration reform initiative but it affects or benefits only a small fraction of the huge undocumented population in the U.S. Otherwise, we would have seen hundreds of thousands of them dancing in the streets of America celebrating their liberation from non-resident status. For example, mainly those who arrived in the U.S. as children and those who arrived as parents of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents are covered by Obama initiative. It is said to be temporary and may change under another U.S. president.
