Post-secondary back-to-school tips

Post-secondary back-to-school tips

university students1. Make a detailed packing list. Heading to the dorm? Confirm what furniture you may need in addition to what is provided. Apartment-bound? Consider a room-by-room packing list. Check with your roommates to be sure you don’t double-up on coffee pots or ironing boards.

2. Check if there are prohibited items. Dorms generally have a list of prohibited items. Carefully review any orientation materials to be sure you are using your packing space efficiently and only bringing what you can keep in your room.

3. Carefully plan your move. Anticipate that there will be a considerable migration of students around Labour Day. Book ahead if you need a moving van and think about the best time of day to make unpacking more efficient. If it’s a dorm, confirm the move-in instructions and directions to avoid confusion. If you’re planning to rent a truck or use a moving service, do your research, solicit referrals and get quotes in writing.

4. Look into tenant’s insurance. Many students may be renting for the first time. Students and parents should consider speaking with the family’s insurance agent to determine what coverage they have and what they may need to consider adjusting or adding on. Students sharing a house or apartment with friends should each have their own insurance policy to protect themselves and their belongings.

5. Consider a safe for valuable items. If you are planning to bring expensive items like jewellery, look into bringing a small safe to protect your items. You can also store your chequebook or small electronics to protect your items from theft.

6. Determine the right car insurance. With students attending school in different cities, provinces or countries, many may take a vehicle with them, while others may drive only while home on breaks. Speak with your insurance agent to find out what makes the most sense for your situation.
