MP Mark Adler replies to Philippine Reporter article on caregivers

MP Mark Adler replies to Philippine Reporter article on caregivers

MARK ADLER

MARK ADLER

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Please see the below on behalf of Conservative candidate Mark Adler. It is in response to a flawed article that recently appeared in your publication (Caregivers deplore new program, Sept. 11, 2015).

I write to correct the record for your readers. A recent article in your publication contained information that was outdated or simply incorrect.

Our Conservative government recognizes that caregivers make extremely valuable contributions to Canadian families and Canada’s economy. For far too long, caregivers were subject to rules that made them vulnerable to abusive work environments. We have strengthened protections and ended the live-in requirement.

Under the improved Caregiver Programs, 90% of all completed Labour Market Impact Assessments applications have, in fact, been approved – contrary to what has been cited by some who have criticized our reforms.

Our Conservative government remains on track to meeting commitment to admit 60,000 caregivers and eliminate the old backlog entirely within two years. In fact, 2015 and 2016 will see the highest levels of admissions for caregivers in Canadian history.

More than 271,000 Filipinos have come to Canada since our government was first elected in 2006. That’s 135% more than over the same number of years under the previous Liberal government (115,412).

What’s more, the reformed caregiver programs provide faster, safer and better opportunities for caregivers in Canada. Conservatives have removed the requirement that a caregiver live in the home of their employer, provided more pathways to permanent residency with better career options, and reunited families faster than ever before.

Other parties, Justin’s Liberals in particular, have proposed schemes that would be major steps backward for caregivers and their loved ones. Only Conservatives understand the needs of caregivers and all they contribute to Canada, and only Conservatives can be trusted to do what’s right for those hardworking caregivers who work so tirelessly and so selflessly for others.

Sincerely,

Mark Adler
Conservative candidate for York Centre
