A Conversation with Dr. Yen Le Espiritu
Filipino-American, Filipino Canadian:
Location: OCAD University, 100 McCaul St., Room 230,
Time: 7:30pm – 9:00 pm, October 9th 2015
Filipinos/as in the US and Canada have many similarities and differences. Both share a rich history of migration, along with a diasporic notion of belonging and community formation. Compared to their kababayan in the US, however, Filipinos/as in Canada have arrived through different immigration schemes, into a host society that is distinct in all sorts of ways. Likewise, Filipino/a youth in each country have grown up in different contexts. Please join us as we learn more about these similarities and differences from Dr. Yen Le Espiritu, Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Espiritu has been at the forefront of research on Filipino-American and Pan-Asian experiences for more than two decades. Her writings on Filipinos/as in San Diego, in particular, have provided a vivid portrait of how youth, gender, class and race affect the lived realities of these communities. This community event is free and open to everyone, and will be led by Conley de Leon (PhD student at York University) and Jennilee Austria (youth settlement worker and writer). It will have an interview format. So, feel free to come with your own questions, so that we may learn from lively conversation and debate. This event will be held at OCAD University (OCADU), as a collaboration between OCADU’s Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences and with York University’s Centre for Asian Research (YCAR).
