Toronto City Council passes resolution offering condolences to Rani Rivera’s family

Rani-ReviraThe Toronto City Council recently passed a resolution sending their condolences to the family of Rani Rivera, highlighting her social justice advocacy work in the communities she served.

“The Mayor and Members of the Toronto City Council are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Rani Rivera on August 3, 2016,” the statement said.

Rani Rivera_doc“Rani Rivera spent most of her adult life as a social justice advocate, with particular attention to women who were marginalized due to issues with mental health and/or addiction,” the statement noted.

“While her life was brief, the profound impact Rani made on the lives of those who knew her will endure,” it added.

The Council lauded Rani’s achievements in founding ROOM, a project which provides support for women with mental health issues through the literary and creative arts, as well as her work at Progress Place through the St. Jamestown Community Corner and the Weston-Mount Dennis Community Place Hub..

“We are deeply grateful to the Toronto City Council, especially to Councillor Frances Nunziata who sponsored the resolution, and to Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell, for seconding it,” said a statement released by the Rivera family, through parents Joe and Patty Rivera.
