Alyssa Grace Datu: Fil-Can Teen wows judges on The Voice Teens PH
By Michelle Chermaine Ramos
16-year old Markham-based Alyssa Grace Datu turned all four judges’ chairs with her emotional rendition of “Hanggang” on The Voice Teens Philippines, which won her a standing ovation from Lea Salonga, Sarah Geronimo and Sharon Cuneta. Canadian-born and raised, Alyssa also wowed them with her fluency in Tagalog.
She remembers singing when she was only a year-old and started performing in public around the GTA when she was ten. Asked about how she chose a song for the audition, she explained that it was her Lola’s favorite. “It’s one of those songs that never gets old for me because I have a personal connection with it. I just felt that there was so much to do with it and obviously going across the world to follow your dream, I tried to go with my best bet.”
As for choosing Cuneta as her coach, she explained, “In the moment I felt like Sharon was the most convincing to me and I also looked up to her pretty much my whole life especially because of my style of singing. She’s always done her best and she’s known for telling her story and singing emotionally and that’s something that I really want to enhance in myself.”
Alyssa is currently training with her mentor Beverly Vergel and vocal teacher Julie Anne Reyes to prepare for the first round of the competition. When this writer first heard Alyssa sing two years ago, I knew she was going to be big. However, what I admire most about her is how humble and kind she is despite her undisputable God-given talent and how she has used her gift to help others with her charity projects. There are so-called celebrities, and there are stars – and there is a difference between the two. It takes more than talent to make a star. To find a natural talent with a genuinely kind heart is a rare gem and Alyssa is a rising star the community can be proud of.
As for her message to everyone, “Please like, comment, share and subscribe to the channels. Thank you to everyone who has shown me an overwhelming amount of support. I would also like to add a special mention to Ms. Beverly Vergel and Ms. Julie Anne Reyes for all their help, support and guidance.”
