FCT Spring-Summer activities on track

Despite search for new home

TORONTO–Officials of the Filipino Community Toronto (FCT), one of the city’s longest running Filipino community centres, want to assure people who have grown to enjoy and depend on its services that the organization will carry on with certain activities scheduled for May thru July this year despite the FCT’s ongoing search for a new home.

The decades old FCT has sold its facilities at 597 Parliament Street. The organization is currently looking for a suitable building to move into. FCT has a more than a year to look for a new location since it closed its door on Parliament centre on January 31, 2017, but is said to be looking for a new venue aggressively. There is also a budget allocated for the purchase of a new FCT centre.

“We at FCT have always worked to promote and foster unity among the Filipino-Canadians of GTA and to encourage affirmative interest and better understanding of other ethnic groups and the Canadian mainstream,” said Mary Ann San Juan, the newly-appointed FCT president. She added, “We remain committed to these goals and will strive to sustain and deliver our usual services throughout this transition period.”

San Juan also said the FCT will push through with the following 2017 activities as scheduled:

• Victoria Invitational Basketball Tournament – May 19, 20 & 21

• Pistahan – Saturday, June 10

• Dr. Guillermo de Villa Golf Tournament – Sunday, July 16

The new location of FCT, according to San Juan, will definitely be in the City of Toronto, where there is access to local transportation and, if possible, central to most amenities.
Despite its closure, FCT is pushing for its major activities to raise funds for its many activities when the new centre resumes normal operations.

“Once we have a new place, which we hope we will find within a foreseeable future, the regular FCT activities will resume,” said San Juan.

As expected, FCT will continue to promote the charitable and non-profit nature of the organization while fostering unity among Filipino-Canadians in the GTA.
