The search for an MPP nominee for Mississauga Centre, whose name will be submitted by the search organizers to the Provincial Nomination Committee of the Ontario PC Party for approval, ended Sunday (March 25) with the selection of Rosemer Enverga, widow of the late Sen. Tobias Enverga Jr.

Enverga was one of three aspirants who accepted their nominations at a community meeting held at Huron Park Center in Mississauga.

The other two were Jose Salamena of Brampton, who was nominated by Julius Tiangson, and Dr. Coeliflor Silva of Mississauga who was nominated by Dr. Annette Simbulan.

The selection process of a Filipino-Canadian nominee was unique. There was no votation by those present at the meeting. Instead, the nominated candidates themselves picked someone from among them to be the official community nominee.

After the aspirants gave their acceptance speeches, they were huddled to a separate meeting room for the purpose of choosing from among themselves a “unity candidate”.

Salamena and Silva backed out and chose Enverga. Salamena and Silva spoke about the importance of putting up a united front, after giving way to Enverga.

On March 15, the PC Party re-opened the nominations in Mississauga Center and two other ridings, in effect setting aside the candidacy of Angely Pacis.

Pacis has so far not disclosed what her plans are or whether she is allowed to enter the nomination race. Enverga praised Pacis during her acceptance speech and declared that she will gladly withdraw if Pacis is reinstated.

If Rosemer is approved by the PC Party to run for nomination, she will face Tanya Granic Allen, who chose Mississauga Center riding to run in, and the nominees of other ethnic groups.
