Youth involved in the Kamalayan Midya Youth Project learned significant aspects of news writing conducted by publisher and editor Hermie Garcia and managing editor Mila Astorga-Garcia of The Philippine Reporter.

The workshop was held Thursday. Sept. 6 at the new SEAS office in Regent Park Toronto.

Focus of the presentation were the two essentials of newswriting: context and impact on public interest, thus, diverging from the usual news story basics of “who, what, when, where, how and why”.

Participants were Filipino youth ranging from 16 to 27, some of them new immigrants and one second generation Canadian; some were in school, others out of school and working or volunteering.

The Kamalayan Youth Midya Project is a media production program which includes training for various aspects of media work, specifically in radio, and TV production. It is a project of Kamalayan Konscousness Collective, working with partners Radyo Migrante and TV Migrante and the Filipino Canadian Writers and Journalists Network (FC-WJNet). The project aims to train youth in media work “to broaden the Filipino youth voice” by working with community partners in the media, says Sarah J. Salise, Kamalayan coordinator.
