Nastasha Alli won the prestigious 2018 Food Sustainability Media Award in the unpublished written journalism category.

She received an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the award ceremonies in Milan, Italy, Nov. 2018 and to participate in a Thomson Reuters Foundation media training course on food sustainability in March 2019.

Out of over 400 contenders all over the world, Nastasha’s piece, titled Why The Philippines May Run Out Of Fish By 2048, was chosen, along with three other winners in different categories – the published written journalism category, the unpublished multimedia category, and the published multimedia category

— by an independent panel of leading professionals from the fields of journalism, photography, food and agricultural sustainability policy and research.

The Food Sustainability Media Award aims to recognise the work of professional journalists and emerging talent from all over the world for excellence in reporting and communicating issues related to food security, sustainability, agriculture and nutrition.

The Award is organized and sponsored by Thomson Reuters Foundation with partner Barilla Centre for Food and Nutrition.

Another 2018 milestone for Nastasha as a food writer is getting published in ‘The New Filipino Kitchen: Stories and Recipes from Around the Globe,’ an anthology edited by Jacqueline Chio-Lauri. Her entry, titled ‘Every Sunset,’ is all about cooking pansit palabok, her favorite dish. The elegant volume features 19 other contributors, including Cristeta “Chris” Comerford, the White House Executive Chef.

Nastasha told us about her experience being honoured in Milan, along with the three other winners. “It was overwhelming!.. They thought I was full-time,” as almost everyone there was a full-time journalist, she said.

Nastasha is a writer, recipe developer, podcaster and a food tour guide in Toronto. She is a member of the PLUMA collective, and is one of the mainstays of the Filipino Canadian Writers and Journalists Network (FC-WJNet).
