Nicole Huff of Degrassi fame: Soaring TV series and film career
By Rachelle Cruz
Nicole Huff, who had played Gloria Chin on Degrassi, has new projects this year that reflect her continuing success in her chosen field.
She is a guest star aka Renee Joy on this new CBC Network legal drama TV series, Diggstown. Her episode starts March 13.
Huff also got a chance to work with Jason Priestley, a Canadian-American actor and director best known as the virtuous Brandon Walsh on the television series Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990–2000). She plays Grace on this Global Network’s TV series called Private Eyes, airing in May.
Huff also got the lead star in Best Friends Forever – Horror Short Film, directed and written by Emily Gagne and Josh Korngut. This girls-only ensemble in BFF is set I the 90s about the horrors of social exclusion.
Meanwhile, the eighteen year old Huff (a lavish debut was held at King Edward Hotel to celebrate her birthday) has been very busy with her ongoing professional commitments and studies. Between her hectic audition schedules, she does commercial shoots and is attending her studies in the Radio and Television Arts Program at Ryerson University.
The Philippine Reporter, which featured her early successes in 2015 (Flirtatious and feisty on Degrassi Season 14, Jan. 23 to Feb. 12, 2015 issue), caught up with the rising star for a brief interview.
How do manage your hectic schedule?
The people I work with like my manager and my mama help me out. Also keeping organized helps. When my bags and papers are messy or my lines aren’t highlighted its so weird to me.
What keeps you balanced and inspired?
What keeps me inspired is knowing that in this world, you can do and pursue whatever you wish and meet so many different people with different stories than you. It’s a beautiful thing.
I’m interested in playing roles that I maybe haven’t played before or using my figure skating or dance skills. I’d love to work with people I’ve always wanted to work with. A dream of mine would be to work with Jennifer Lawrence or be able to do duets with huge names like Christina Aguilera and Ariana Grande. But like I said that’s a huge step up for me. I’m not there yet. I have big dreams! I’m still learning about the industry! I’d still consider myself new to the industry. I’ve done some commercials but hopefully with the hard work and dedication, I’d love to be a lead in a series or get into movies.
Any advice for younger talents like you?
I would say to them to never give up. Also, to not let it get to your head and to try and have thick skin. Not everyone in the audition room will like your work or will want to pick you and that’s okay because there are other opportunities. Continue writing, practicing and getting better at your craft. Find other passions aside from your talent so you don’t get overly obsessed with booking. It can get unhealthy.
Fave snack while on set? Almonds & coffee (even though coffee isn’t a snack) lol
Mariah or Jlo? I love both the Divas but maybe Jlo because she dances. Mariah for her Christmas music.
Favourite line in a movie…. Taken. “I don’t know who you are but I will find you and I will kill you.” Or Wizard of Oz. “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”
If not acting, then what? Probably like a writer. My English teachers in school always told me that’s what I should consider pursuing.
Must-have item in your purse… Mascara or lip stick.
If you could travel now, where’s your next stop? Easily Japan or Singapore.
