Joe Rivera exhibits Migrant Series
TORONTO–Filipino-Canadian artist Joe Rivera is exhibiting his paintings from April 21 to 25, at the Toronto City Hall, and from May 13 to 19 at Toronto Metro Hall.
His four paintings feature migrant workers, and are part of his bigger work of ten paintings focusing on caregivers and seasonal farmers, some of which were exhibited during last year’s Migrante labour day celebration.
“This Migrant Worker Series was a year-long project I started last year and was an attempt to experiment on social realism works,” Rivera says.
“(This is) sort of a break from my usual abtract impressionist works,” he adds. “This series was also influenced by my fascination with the 1920’s modernism movement by the Beaver Hall Group.”
Filipino-Canadian writer and singer-composer Lui Queaño also has some action photos displayed in the exhibit.
Rivera and Queaño join other Asian-Canadian artists and the Chinese-Canadian Photographers Association to commemorate Asian Heritage Month this year.
