Kadayawan at Carassauga

Mississauga’s Festival of Cultures, May 24, 25, 26, 2019

“The Kadayawan Festival is an annual festival held in Davao City in the southern region of the Philippines. In ancient times, the indigenous tribes of Davao held a ritual in Mount Apo to give thanks and honour to Manama (the Supreme being) and Butan (Moon Deity) for bountiful harvest. The first ritual gathering happened on a full moon night – as tribes believed that their deity comes to Earth at this time. The tribes addressed the moon deity as “dayaw” or “kadayaw”, which meansgood, superior, or beautiful. These ritual gatherings evolved into great celebration of life and all things good where the people sing, dance, and display fruits, vegetables, and flowers to show gratefulness.”
Core performers are from Culture Philippines of Ontario (CPO) under the guidance and mentorship of Artistic Director, Dr. Patrick Alcedo. CPO has participated in various charitable events, fundraising, and celebrations within the community. They had the opportunity to perform at some international festivals such as in Belgium, Italy, Mexico, Poland and Spain.

Iskwelahang Pilipino Rodalla Group entertained the crowd with their skills in playing their instruments with some of their members dancing around while also playing their instrument. They supplemented their performance with their colorful and vibrant attire. Iskwelahang Pilipino is a non-profit organization run by volunteers in the Greater Boston area.
