PLUMA: An intimate night of story telling

Filipino Heritage Month might be in June but we are continuing to celebrate the diverse stories of Filipino-Canadians all year round! Pluma Collective is a collective of Filipino-Canadian writers in the Greater Toronto Area whose work spans genres and generations. They will be hosting an intimate night of storytelling at Another Story Bookshop, 315 Roncesvalles Ave., Toronto on Saturday, July 20, 7 PM – 10 PM.

Hear from emerging and established writers like Maria Patricia Abuel, Nastasha Alli, Jennilee Austria, Miguel Leandro Gamboa, Yves Lamson, Eric Tigley, and Justine Abigail Yu.
Books by all writers will be available for purchase at the event.

Maria Patricia Abuel is a Toronto born and raised multidisciplinary artist. Her practice involves questioning issues of hybrid identity, femininity, and conservative expectations. She has exhibited at Trinity Square Video, Art Museum, Y+ Contemporary, and Open Space Gallery at OCADU. You can find her at mpabuelstudio.com
Nastasha Alli is a food and travel writer based in Toronto and host of the Exploring Filipino Kitchens podcast. She won the 2018 Food Sustainability Media Award for her reporting work on overfishing and plastic pollution in the Philippines. Her work has appeared in multiple online and print publications, and in “The New Filipino Kitchen” cookbook (Agate, 2018).

Jennilee Austria founded Filipino Talks — a program that promotes understanding between school staff and Filipino newcomer families — after working in four Ontario school boards as a settlement worker, public speaker, equity advisor, and researcher. She has a Masters in Immigration and Settlement Studies from Ryerson University and is a graduate of the Humber School for Writers. She has recently finished her first manuscript, The Caregiver’s Son– a fictional story based on thousands of truths.
M.L. GAMBOA is a Filipinx writer from Baliuag, Bulacan. They are named after a student protest leader and a telenovela character. ML is the host of Speakeasy, the reading series of the University of Guelph MFA program. They live, write, and play Street Fighter in Tkaronto. They proudly wear their mother’s last name.
Yves Lamson is a first generation Filipino-Canadian writer who takes from the Philippine oral tradition to spin tales of fantastic creatures. He also enjoy writing around the historical elements of the islands he is wistful and wondrous for. Bodies of Water is a little bit of magic, a little bit of history, and has a whole lot to say about women in the Philippines.

Eric B. Tigley is a battling artist, teacher, and book maker. He draws his inspiration from the sights and sounds of Toronto, especially the diversity of students he has worked with through out the years. Eric is currently working on three new projects which are slated for the end of this summer.

Justine Abigail Yu is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Living Hyphen, an intimate journal that explores the experiences of hyphenated Canadians and examines what it means to be part of a diaspora. Justine Abigail is a fierce advocate for diversity and representation in Canada’s arts and literature scene. Her mission is to stir the conscience and spur social change.
