#FILIPINOW Campaign Celebrates Diversity and Cultural Richness and of the Filipino Diaspora
#FILIPINOW Campaign seeks to break taboos in June – the Filipino Heritage Month
• First of a kind initiative seeks to dispel stereotypical notions, highlight achievement
• #FILIPINOW seeks to tell stories about Filipinos beyond their crucial roles in healthcare
• #FILIPINOW is A rallying cry for over 12 million Filipinos living outside of the Philippines and half of which are in Canada and the USA.
Toronto — A unique campaign #FILIPINOW is set to break through cultural taboos and highlight the continued and invaluable contributions of the growing Filipino diaspora in Canada, the US and across the world. The #FILIPINOW campaign is being spearheaded by Filipino-Canadians, Joycelyn David and Argentina Beltran with the support of prominent Filipino influencers, media community advocates across North America. The idea to launch #FILIPINOW stemmed from a shared desire to connect with Filipinos of all backgrounds and generations globally.
The campaign hashtag #FILIPINOW combines a sense of urgency that “now” is the right time to talk about the impact of the community. Estimated at nearly one million, Filipinos are the third largest ethnic group in Canada, and continue to play a crucial role in Canada’s healthcare system. In fact, the first three of five people to be vaccinated for COVID-19 were Filipino frontline workers.
The #FILIPINOW campaign is calling on the Filipino Diaspora to tell their stories out loud throughout June. “We want to instill a sense of belonging and solidarity among Filipinos,” says Joycelyn, who owns a leading Toronto-based multicultural agency AVCommunciations. “We want to elevate the Filipino community and importantly tell their stories through our own words.”
Cathy Dona, a Creative Strategist based in Toronto, shared similar sentiments, “Every Filipino has a story to tell, and I believe the world is ready to listen. “Dahil ang kuwentong Pinoy dapat ipagpatuloy. (Because the Filipino story must continue) – in Canada and beyond.”
Argentina, a Filipina-Canadian entrepreneur and branding/marketing strategist says through #FILIPINOW she’s on a mission to highlight the contribution of the Filipino community globally and to showcase their strengths and leadership across various industries and professions. “My name might be Argentina but I am a proud Filipina. To my Filipino brothers and sisters, I encourage you to keep showing your knack for innovation, speak up and keep building our legacy across the world,” she said. “To my Filipino brothers and sisters, I encourage you to keep fighting for representation. To our allies, make space for us and acknowledge our contribution. Filipinos are here. We matter and we are visible.”
