Resistance Across Generations

Resistance Across Generations

Justine Abigail Yu

Living Hyphen Launches Issue 2

TORONTO– Living Hyphen, a community that explores the experiences of what it means to live in between cultures as hyphenated Canadians, is launching Issue 2, Volume 1 of their magazine on July 15, 2021. This issue explores the theme of “Resistance Across Generations.”

“The last year and a half has revealed to the masses the injustices and inequities that so many racialized communities must face on a daily basis,” said Justine Abigail Yu, the founder of Living Hyphen and Editor-in-Chief of the magazine. “And yet, in spite of all this, we stand. In the face of pain, grief, loss, and anger, the stories in this issue are a mighty reminder of our indomitable spirits.”

The 122-page, perfect bound, and full colour magazine features over 60 stories from artists and writers across the country and hailing from over 40 ethnic backgrounds, religions, and Indigenous nations combined. The poetry, short stories, essays, illustrations, photography, and other visual interpretations that make up the magazine all centre around histories and legacies of resistance from communities who have been displaced around the world.

“We asked people who have been displaced in some way – whether forced or voluntary, abroad or right here on this land – to tell us the stories of their ancestors and of their lineage,” said Jocelyn Yu, publisher of Living Hyphen. “Artists and writers from all across what we now know as “Canada” answered with a resounding force of resistance, with the power of the memories and stories that have been passed down from generation to generation.”

Living Hyphen will be celebrating their launch with a virtual launch party featuring storytelling from artists and writers published in the magazine. RSVP here.

Living Hyphen’s mission is to reshape the mainstream and to turn up the volume on voices that often go unheard. They do this through their print magazine, cultural programming, and podcast.  Pre-order Issue 2, Volume 1: Resistance Across Generations at www.livinghyphen.com/shop.
