Martial Law @50 event Sept. 16
Malaya Canada is holding a public event called Martial Law @50 to mark the anniversary of the declaration of martial law in the Philippines.
The whole day event will be held Friday, September 16, 2022 from 9 am to 6 pm at the Valour Community Centre Orioles Site, 448 Burnell St., Winnipeg, Manitoba.
It was on September 21, 1972 that Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. declared martial law over the entire country.
“It is a period in our people’s history that must not be forgotten, and it must not happen again,” says Marissa Corpus, Spokesperson, Malaya Movement of Canada in a letter inviting people to attend.
“More than ever, it is important and necessary to not only remember the dark years of martial rule, but also to remember the resistance under the shadows of repression and gross violations of human rights. And to continue to fight,” Corpus added in the same letter.
The event will also honor not only the victims of martial law – those tortured, killed and forcibly disappeared, but also its survivors. It will feature speeches, cultural numbers and workshops.
Attending will be convenors and members of the Malaya chapters in Vancouver, Toronto.
