Kin of rights abuses belie claims of justice secretary at the UPR

MANILA – Utterly untrue.
This is how Xandra Bisenio, daughter of peace consultant and political prisoner Rey Casambre, described what Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla presented to the United Nations Human Rights Council during the fourth cycle of Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva, Switzerland on Monday, Nov. 14.
In the Philippine government’s response to the recommendations of the UN member states, Remulla said that “the democratic tradition of the Philippines is an enabling environment for human rights defenders to promote their advocacies through participative governance.”
